SHILLONG, JAN 6: The elections to the Khasi and Jaintia hills autonomous district councils are likely to be held on the last week of February. The state cabinet is meeting on Tuesday for a formal decision on the district council elections which accordingly will be notified to the Meghalaya governor KK Paul.

Meghalaya district council affairs minister HDR Lyngdoh told reporters on Monday that the state government is intending to hold the elections of the district councils in Khasi and Jaintia hills on the last week of February.  He however said as far as the council elections in Garo hills concerned it might be held in the first week of March.

According to Lyngdoh, the date for the elections in the Jaintia and Khasi Hills Autonomous District Councils will be discussed in the state cabinet tomorrow. He said, “The elections for both Khasi and Jaintia Hills will be held on the same day.”

Once the cabinet decides on the election date, the decision will be send to the state governor KK Paul for his approval. – By Our Reporter
