SHILLONG, FEB 13: Community and Rural Development (C&RD) minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Monday said the newly created Mawlai C&RD Block will likely be inaugurated in the month of April. The assurance was given to a delegation of the Mawlai Town Dorbar led by UDP legislator Embhahlang Syiemlieh which met the minister on Monday to expressed concern over the delay on the matter.

“He (Dhar) has assured us that the Mawlai Community and Rural Development will be made functional by April this year after finalization of the land for construction of its office,” Syiemlieh told reporters after the meeting.

Mawlai, which earlier falls under the jurisdiction of the Mylliem C&RD Block, is one of the four new C&RD blocks announced by the state government last year.

He said besides demanding the state government to speed up the inauguration of this new block, the delegation had also maintained that the block office should be located within Mawlai area.

“We have also suggested the need to form a committee comprising of the department official, MTD functionaries and the MLA to discuss on the requirement of the block,” Syiemlieh said.

Stating that land will not be an issue, the UDP legislator said that there are two lands which they have identified and is contemplating to propose to the state government for its consideration.

“One option is for the state government to utilize the forest land locating opposite the FCI office at Mawlai and if not we have a second option which we will disclose at the right time,” he said.

According to him, the proposed land will be free of cost.

Meanwhile, the MTD and MLA will also convene a meeting to discuss on the issue on February 15.
