SHILLONG, FEB 11: Congress chief Vincent H Pala on Saturday accused the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government of making the border issue more complicated.
“This (MDA) government has not solved it (border issue) rather they are making it more complicated,” Pala told reporters while responding to a query if the Congress will revoke the MoU signed between Assam and Meghalaya last year with regards to six of the twelve areas of difference.
Asserting the need to take all stakeholders on board while finding an amicable solution to the problem, the Shillong MP said, “It is not that a chief minister of one state and another chief minister sits in a five star hotel and say they have solved the problem. After they have signed the agreement, how many people have been killed. So they have not been able to solve the border problem.”
He said that during the Congress regime, efforts were made to ensure people from both the states work together and respect each other.
“Assam is a state, which covers almost three-fourth of Meghalaya, so we cannot afford to fight in such a way where there is bloodshed all the time,” he said.
Pala said that the Congress is pushing for a boundary commission to come up with an amicable solution to the long pending boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya.
“If the commission is there then every stakeholder in the border will get an opportunity to examine, will get an opportunity to represent their views, ideas, history, geographically and that should be a solution – it is not sitting only three-four months and visiting the border and solved the problem,” he said while assuring the people of the state that the Congress will come up with a proper solution if voted to power after the elections.
