MDA partners betrayed people: Opp

SHILLONG, APR 23: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Saturday accused the coalition partners of the NPP-led MDA government of “playing to the gallery” and have betrayed the people of the state.

“If they withdraw from the government, they must be very clear on what issue. Now you will see many attempts by the parties who are in the coalition to play to the gallery. We are going to tell people why it is considered as an attempt to play to the gallery. So all the parties in the government have played to the gallery but at the same time by doing so they have betrayed the people of the state,” Sangma told reporters.

Citing an example, the former chief minister said the UDP has taken issues and concerns of the people pertaining to various irregularities in respect to Saubhagya, Smart metering etc but what happened to the so-called inquiry committee instituted by the government to probe into the matter.

“Is it a committee to actually unearth the truth? Does it have the terms of reference to have enough teeth in accordance with the provisions of the law to go after those who are involved in any irregularities if there is any. The terms of reference dilute its own objective – so that means it is an attempt to play to the gallery,” he said.

He added, “What about coal? You hear lots of concern being expressed by BJP, also the regional parties, what happened – playing to the gallery.”

The Leader of Opposition further stated that the only way to stop the wrongdoings of the MDA government is by reducing its strength.

“Unless the parties who are giving strength through numbers allow the ruling dispensation to remain in power, unless they withdraw and reduce the number, the government will not fall,” he said.

Referring to the actual stand taken by the coalition partners on various issues, Sangma said, “By the time the election comes you will see all these regional parties trying to point finger at NPP to pretend to insulate themselves from all the wrong doings but today you look at along with the members of the cabinet from NPP, you have various ministers in the cabinet from UDP, who are holding very important portfolios including home, revenue.”

He also pointed to the stand of the UDP and other coalition partners on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Meghalaya and Assam for resolving the 6 of the 12 areas of difference.

“What is the stand of the UDP? They have asked the government to reconsider and revisit. Have they asserted? If they have not asserted are not they are playing to the gallery. Who holds the portfolio of revenue? This is with one of the ministers of the UDP. You again go further. Who are the chairmen of the regional committees? One of the regional committees of West Khasi Hills is from HSPDP. Then you have two other regional committees the chairmen of which are from NPP,” Sangma said while adding that in fact they are all together (as MDA) in this decision.

“Now how they want to point fingers at each other except they attempt to play to the gallery. So you will have to understand the honest intent which emanates from their hearts. If they are saying something with an attempt to say that they are sincere enough to protect the interest of our people and the jaidbynriew, it must be an honest indication and that honest indication must be demonstrated by action. It can’t be lip service or an attempt to play to the gallery,” he further stated.
