Polls:Dorphang clarifies

SHILLONG, OCT 16: The Mawhati Constituency Political Committee (MCPC) said that it is yet to take any decision with regards to the upcoming Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections in the state slated next year. “So far, we have not taken any decision on the forthcoming district council elections in the state,” MCPC chairman Julius Dorphang, who is also an Independent legislator of Mawhati, told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday.

The former HNLC chairman turned politician along with the members of the MCPC was reacting to the recent allegation that the MCPC has decided to support James Sylliang who is one of the candidate from Mawhati to contest in the upcoming district council elections.

On October 5, few people who claimed they to belong to the MCPC had alleged that MCPC led by Dorphang has unanimously decided to support Sylliang who is also a former member of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) from Mawhati constituency.

“The allegation is nothing but baseless and it is just to create confusion in the minds of the people of the area,” Dorphang said adding “Till today, we are not supporting anybody whether from independent or political parties so far as this particular elections is concerned.”

Dorphang, however, informed that the MCPC would soon take a call on the matter. He also maintained that it is too early to say whether he is going to contest the MDC elections or not.- By Our Reporter
