MDC quits Congress

SHILLONG, MAR 28: Congress MDC from Rambrai-Jyrngam  Bajop Pyngrope on Monday quit the party and announced his decision to join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) on March 31.

Pyngrope along with 19 leaders and members of the Rambrai-Jyrngam Block Congress Committee marched to Congress Bhavan and tendered mass resignation from the primary membership of the party.

The letter of resignation addressed to the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Vincent H Pala was received by the party office secretary.

Speaking to reporters, Pyngrope said, “It pains a lot to leave the Congress after being associated with the party for the past eight years.”

Citing infighting among tall leaders as the main reason for his decision to quit the party, the MDC alleged, “All the in-charge of different states are corrupted and this has led to the decline of the Congress. They don’t listen to the masses, the general public, the people who are in the party, but they take one-sided decisions.”

He further claimed that many leaders will be coming out of the Congress especially from Eastern West Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills, where he had worked tirelessly and extensively for the party.

“Even in the Youth Congress, many leaders will be joining me in the days to come,” he said.

When asked, Pyngrope said that he would immediately join the NPP on March 31.

“(From now onwards) I will work hard for the NPP not only in Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency but in Eastern West, West Khasi Hills and the state as a whole,” he assured.

Lauding the NPP for having the political will to resolve the long pending boundary issue, the MDC said, “There is no other party which has taken this step to solve the boundary problem but we have seen the chief minister trying a lot (to resolve the issue).”

“The chief minister had pointed out in the Assembly that all villages in three areas – Tarabari, Hahim and Gizang, under West Khasi Hills district – will fall in Meghalaya. Almost 97 percent of the villages have come to Meghalaya. I am very happy as this is a big victory for us and for the state,” he said while adding that the chief minister will further try to ensure two more villages will also be part of Meghalaya.

Those who resigned also include BCC working president Ailand Lyngdoh, general secretary Phrangbor Marngar, vice president Thelen Sangma and Mahila president Bertila Dkhar.
