‘MDCs voluntarily left’

SHILLONG, DEC 3: Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Thursday concluded that its two MDCs have “voluntarily left” the party by extended their support recently to the ruling People Democratic Front (PDF) led by the Congress in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

“Extending support to the PDF without the knowledge of the party only means that they have volunteer to leave the party,” HSPDP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit told reporters at the sideline of a swearing in ceremony of the party’s newly elected MLA D Jyndiang on Thursday.

Two MDCs of the opposition HSPDP which includes Nongstoin MDC LG Nongsiej and Mawshynrut MDC Morningstar Mawsor have submitted a letter of support to the PDF executive committee (EC) led by KHADC congress CEM Pynshngain N Syiem  on December 1.

The letter was also jointly submitted along with the two other opposition MDCs of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) – Jaiaw MDC Adelbert Nongrum and Mawkhar-Pynthor MDC James Ban Basaiawmoit.

With this development, the strength of the PDF has gone up from 21 to 23 members, strong enough to hold it till the end of the term.

When asked, Basaiawmoit said, “The party will soon convene its central executive committee (CEC) meeting to decide on the matter,” adding “We will accept their decision.”

Whether the party would issue show-cause the two MDCs, he however said, “The matter would only be decided after the CEC meeting,” adding “The decision by the two MDCs was taken without the consent of the party.”

“It is their duty to maintain discipline as party men, as the party has its own principle,” Basaiawmoit said.

Stating it will not be appropriate to blame the party, he said, “This is because the people now are wiser and they always follow up on the issues taken up by the party. I feel that the word Jaidbynriew has been often misused.”-By Our Reporter
