Meghalaya also face girl-child discrimination

TariangSHILLONG, JAN 29: Saying that the status of discrimination of girl child in Meghalaya is not very different from other states in the country as survey report suggests, Meghalaya State Social Welfare Board (MSSWB) chairman OB Tariang, however, said that the state is fortunate of being a matrilineal society as it emphasis on the importance of the girl child.

As the MSSWB celebrated the National Girl Child Day on Tuesday, Tariang, who graced the function as the chief guest, said though Meghalaya is a state which theoretically gives importance to the girl child unlike in other parts of the country but, she rued,  that the daily reports in newspapers suggest that Meghalaya also lives with the horror of sexual harassment, molestation and other crimes against women and children.

Tariang felt that such acts are committed because of lack of fellowship and guidance by the parents of those who commit such crime leading the children to live a life of temptation and to commit such offences.

Tariang underlined the importance of the role of traditional institutions and ngos in fighting such menace by cooperating with the government and taking active part in the fight against discrimination and crimes against women and child girl.  She highlighted the right of a girl child as she said they are the daughters of the present day and future mothers.

Tariang, however, expressed her anguish over the news of rampant discrimination of girl child in other parts of the country and said the girl child are not getting the rights and opportunity that normally the boy child gets.

Others who spoke on during the function were Mission Director of State Resource Centre for Women LN Jyrwa and board member M Khonglah.- By Our Reporter
