Meghalaya CM donates salary for U’khad victims

CHIEF-MINISTERSHILLONG, JUNE 24: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma announced one month’s of his salary contribution and also of the sixty MLAs towards the chief minister’s public relief fund to the flood-ravaged Uttarakhand victims besides sending a paragliding team to assist in relief and rescue teams there.

“We are requesting all our MLAs from the congress party and all friends in the MUA government to be generous enough part with one month’s salary starting from chief Minister,” Sangma told reporters on Monday.

Sangma also said he had written to all other 60 MLAs requesting to part with the one month’s salary to show solidarity with the disaster in Uttarakhand.

“We need to stand together and provide whatever assistance we can give to them as it is a national disaster and with so many lives lost,” Sangma said.

On the reported missing persons from the Meghalaya, Sangma informed that the district administration has been communicating with its counterpart on this issue.

Pointing out that the magnitude of people reported missing is not just one or two, Sangma said, “Therefore it is definitely a joint exercise between the authorities and necessary steps are being taken.” He hoped that the people who are reported missing are safe and will also ensure that they come back safely.

Sangma also appealed to all concerned citizens who are willing to extend their help through the CM’s relief fund to contribute. Apart from the monetary relief, a para gliding team from Meghalaya has also reached Jharkhand on Sunday, he informed.

Sangma said, “I have already sent a team which comprises of the Meghalaya Paragliding Association to assist them in coordinate with all the rescue operations.” The Meghalaya Paragliding Association will assist the rescue teams of the army and paramilitary forces deployed there.

Sangma said, “I personally feel that their services can be use in reaching out to those areas which where helicopter cannot reach.” – By Our Reporter
