SHILL/TURA, JAN 21: By far it is high voltage celebrations as the Meghalaya government pulled all stops to ensure that the 43rd Meghalaya Day celebration on Wednesday was one that would be remembered for a long time to come. The statehood day was marked with official function, sports, musical evening, fun and games for children too.

Never before the Meghalaya Day celebration has been as grand as people and children were seen flocking to all the venues spread over the city to partake the spirit of celebrating the statehood day.

Be it drawing competition for children, marathon, free boating in the century old Wards Lake, the “Peace Concert” at parking lots in Polo, the flower and Bonsai show and the “Inflatable Bouncer” for children  at USoso Tham compound, people with children in tow were seen flocking and enjoying.

The spirit of celebration was not confined to Shillong, it was spread all over the state as Garo hills also celebrated the Meghalaya Day with fun, fervor and indeed prayer.

The Meghalaya Day got off to a racy start in Tura too with a marathon race, followed by a peace prayer at DC Park led by United church of peace forum.

Meghalaya sports and youth affairs minister Zenith Sangma gave away the posthumous appreciation award to Lt Wilson K. Marak and Lt Jenden Ch. Marak for their outstanding contribution towards A’chik literature, folk music and social serves towards the community.

Urging the people to contribute for the progress of the state, Zenith Sangma  said, “It is the duty of the citizen to live responsibly and make contribution for the welfare and development”.

The minister also gave away dustbins to Nehru Ading locality of Tura. The area has been adopted by the chief minister for clean, green and peaceful Meghalaya.

At Ampati in South West Garo hills, deputy commissioner Ram Singh unfurled the national flag, which was followed by march past by school students and cultural items.

The highlight was cycling race – Cyclothon aimed to promote green concepts among the masses.

The race included separate category for men and women below 35 years and a general category for people above 35 years of age. A 62 year old man including a four and half year old were among several participants in the race.

In Shillong, both young and old were seen flocking to the “Peace Concert” at the Polo parking lots and sway to the songs and music played by different bands. Food courts were part of the arrangement made by the Meghalaya Information and Public Relations department.- Bureau reports
