State gets 1st woman Everest climber

myrthongSHILLONG, MAY 18: Saturday will be remembered as a red letter day for Matrilineal Meghalaya as Wansuk  Myrthong became the second mountaineer and the first woman to conquer the 8,848 ft Mount Everest. The first Meghalayan to have scaled the Everest was a Discovery Channel photographer Gary Jarman Lamare last year.

Year 2013 is truly a year of woman in Meghalaya. First, Roshan Warjri became the first woman home minister of the state, then Wansuk Syiem followed by becoming the first woman Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya and now Myrthong has capped it by becoming the second and the only woman mountaineer from the state to scale the Mount Everest.

A police constable of the first Meghalaya police battalion, the thirty years old Myrthong made to the top of the world at 8.30 am on Saturday.

Accolades starting pouring in as news of Myrthong spread like wildfire in the state.

Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said that Myrthong has made Meghalaya proud and proved that there can be no obstacle for anybody to achieve one’s goal. He congratulated her on the achievement.

Meghalaya social welfare minister Deborah Marak said that this was indeed a proud moment for Meghalaya and Myrthong has shown what the women in Meghalaya can achieve as she had shown the world the physical and mental strength that were needed to scale the highest peak in the world.

Home minister Roshan Warjri also joined in showering accolades to Myrthong saying that her achievement is a reflection of her hard work and perseverance and promise to suitably reward her for her herculean feat.- By Our Reporter
