SHILLONG, APRIL 24: Meghalaya will very soon have a women’s battalion in place in order to provide more teeth to the police in tackling an alarming rise in the incidents of crime against women and children in the state.
A high-ranking official in the state home department, on request of anonymity, said the proposal for setting up of the women’s battalion was being processed speedily.
Members cutting across party lines had in the recently-concluded Assembly session expressed raised concern over the rising incidents of crime against women and kid and had urged the government to speed up the process of raising the women’s battalion.
Chief minister Mukul Sangma had admitted that the issue was a worrisome phenomena and the entire society needs to reflect seriously on the matter. “Unless we deal with the root causes of the phenomenon, we would not be able to prevent or stop this from recurring,” he had said.
Statistics collected by the Meghalaya State Crime Record Bureau indicate that in the past seven years 269 minor children were raped in the state, 160 women were raped and another 60 cases of gang rape had taken place.
In 2012 alone, 78 cases of rape of minor were registered, 57 in 2011, 41 in 2010, 17in 2009, 35 in 2008, 24 in 2007 and 17 in 2006. If one closely analysis the figures, rape against minor are increasing every year. While rape cases against women in 2012 was 40, in 2011 it was 35, 32 in 2010, 10 in 2009,18 in 2009, 9 in 2007 and 16 in 2006.
In order to check the growing crime, the government has so far set up women police stations in the headquarters of the seven districts. The government is also contemplating setting up more such women police stations in the newly created districts. (By Our Reporter)
