SHILLONG, DEC 1: Union Minister for Defence, Monohar Parrikar intervention has been sought into the killing of the two civilians by the army in Garo hills with the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) demanding immediate and transparent enquiry followed by an appropriate action against those involved in the killings.

A memorandum to Parrikar has been submitted wherein the  GHSMC chairman Nikman Ch Marak said, “The action calls for an impartial enquiry into the act of unprovoked firing by trigger happy army personnel and ascertain the guilty personnel and according take stringent action against them as per law of the land.”

He also said, “The act of the army personnel belonging to Gorkha regiment, allegedly from Rongjuli army camp, deserves universal condemnation.”

On November 25 at around 8:40 pm at Rajasimla near Kharkutta in North Garo hills, the patrolling army personnel without any provocation shot two dead two civilians Sweetbirth D Marak and Alphius Momin, a school teacher by profession both from Rajasimla village in North Garo hills.

The GHSMC also said adequate compensation to the families of the deceased civilians should be paid.-By Our Reporter
