SHILLONG, MAR 4: A new recruit of the A’chik National Liberation Central Army (ANLCA) surrendered with arms before the East Khasi hills districtSP M Kharkhrang, while a top cadre of the outfit was arrested from a commercial area in Shillong.

Twenty-five year-old Charles D. Shira of Dalbot-A, of Shallang, West Khasi hills, who joined ANLCA in January surrendered before the district police, Kharkhrang told reporters on Tuesday.

Kharkhrang informed that Shira had joined the ANLCA through one Sengpan who is one of the leaders of ANLCA and was arrested in Garo hills recently.

Shira surrendered with one AK-56 Rifle, one magazine of AK-56, eight rounds of 7.65mm live ammunitions, one round of 7.62 live ammunition, eight rounds of .303 ammunitions, one .32 pistol magazine and twenty rounds of 7.65mm live ammunition, Kharkhrang said.

He had deserted the ANLCA camp located inside the jungle in Dagal area, North Garo hills one week back along with the arms and ammunition before surrendering  to the police as he wanted to live a normal life again, Kharkhrang stated.

Meanwhile acting on intelligence inputs, police also arrested another hardcore cadre of the outfit from a tea-stall inside Police Bazar area on Monday evening.

The ANLCA militant has been identified as Rex Briller R. Marak (29), Kharkhrang said. He informed Marak is a top cadre of the  ANLCA militant active in Garo hills and West Khasi hills.

Marak is suspected to be using Shillong as a safe haven for operational planning and command his cadres in Garo hills and West Khasi Hills area for terrorizing people by means of extortion, kidnapping for ransom and also murder, Kharkhrang said.

Kharkhrang informed that a case has been registered against him at Shillong Sadar police station under 63(3)14 u/s 120/121B/384/511 IPC. Investigation is on to ascertain all his linkages especially with regard to supply of arms, he added.- By Our Reporter
