Police impersonator arrested

SHILLONG, MAR 4:  Fifty-two-year-old Sabyasachi Pal Chowdhury alias Baba who was involved in impersonating as a high ranking police officer along with his self-styled personal security officer were arrested on Tuesday by East Khasi hills police.  We have arrested Chowdhury and his self-styled personal security officer identified as Amit Sen from Brinbon Mansions in Laitumkhrah, East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkhrang told reporters on Tuesday.

Kharkhrang said that the accused have been posing as a senior IPS police officer working for Meghalaya police, BSF, SSB, DIG Rashtriya Rifles, CBI, and IB besides assuming the name and role of doctor and Godman.

The self-styled personal security officer (PSO) of the accused Amit Sen was apprehended later from the premises while coming to meet the prime accused, Kharkhrang said.

The police also found one Mahindra Scorpio dark Blue (ML05E-2594) parked  outside his house with a red beacon atop it and designation plate of DIG  rank officer and the words ‘POLICE’ scribed on it and another spare one inside.

After searing his house, many incriminating items like photographs of the suspect in uniform, police and army uniforms including fatigues, caps, pips and flaps of various  ranks, car flags, documents related to SSB, BSF, CBI, IPS,  and NASA, ID cards of  various security organizations, incriminating seals, visiting cards identifying himself as an  IPS officer, 6 mobile phones, several chemicals packed in small bottles suspected to be  intoxicating and Ganja/Cannabis (200 gms), two air pistols with one packet of air- gun  pellets and cash Rs. 2,31,655 were recovered, Kharkhrang informed.

Kharkhrang also informed that all his uniforms and fatigues were also seized.

Documents were also found from his house clearly indicating that Sabyasachi Pal Chowdhury had been earlier arrested in a cheating case which had been charge-sheeted, Kharkhrang added.

A case has been registered against Sabyasachi Chowdhury under  23(3)2014 U/s 116/171/417/419/468/471/472/473/484/120B IPC r/w Sec 20 NDPS Act. Investigation is on to ascertain all his criminal activities, Kharkhrang said.- By Our Reporter
