Ultras serve deadline to govt

SHILLONG, MAR 26: Four Garo militant outfits have give three-day ultimatum to the state government demanding immediate release of A’chik National Liberation Central Army (ANLCA) militants, who recently surrendered before East Khasi Hills district police.

If the government fails to release them, the outfits warned of calling for a complete shut-down in the eleven districts of the state.

In a joint statement issued here on Wednesday, the four militant outfits – United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA), Liberation Achik Elite Force (LAEF), A’chik National Liberation Central Army (ANLCA) and A’chik Sangma An’pachakgipa Kook (ASAK) have demanded the immediate safe and unconditional release of Charles D Shira of ANLCA within three days.

ANCLA cadre Charles D Shira of Dalbot- a village in West Khasi Hills district- had surrendered before the police of East Khasi Hills District on March 4.

He surrendered along with an AK-56 Rifle with magazine of eight rounds of live ammunitions, one round of 7.62 live ammunition, eight rounds of .303 ammunitions, one .32 pistol magazine and twenty rounds of 7.65mm live ammunition.

However, the outfits claimed that Shira was arrested and was also tortured by the police. According to them, such act by police will only discourage member from joining the mainstream. – By Our Reporter
