MLA submits suggestions to HLC

IMG_5052SHILLONG, JUNE 26: KHNAM legislator from North Shillong Adelbert Nongrum has suggested the state government to consider asking the different departments to take responsibility of their own employees, who are residing at Them Iew Mawlong.

In a memorandum submitted to the deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong, who is heading the High Level Committee constituted to find a permanent solution on the matter, Nongrum said that most of the Harijans residing in this area are mainly employed with the Shillong Municipal Board and other departments as well.

“I feel all the concerned departments should take responsibility of their own employees and relocate them to their respective quarters so that the illegal settlers can be removed from the area in discussion for development of the entire Iewduh market…,” he said.

On the other hand, the local MLA also suggested that if the departments are unable to do so, the best thing is to do is to relocate all genuine employees of the state government to the Shillong Cantonment Area which has ample unused space in the civilian areas which can be used for a common interest and for the benefit of the general public of the state.

“The Harijans too will have to understand that this is the best option as they are being relocated right in the city itself and they should not be selfish but think about the overall development of the state which they are also part of,” he said.

Asserting the need for the matter to be resolved by the state government, Nongrum however said that people from outside the state should not interfere with the issue as this is an internal affairs of the state.

According to him, a facelift of the entire area can only be done after the relocation so that developmental activities can happen immediately especially the need to ease the congestion in the city.

Meanwhile, Nongrum also urged the deputy chief minister, who is also in-charge of PWD, to consider the proposal for easing the traffic congestion in and around Khyndailad area.

He said there is an existing approach raod starting from dreamland via Wahingdoh boundary leading up to Wahingdoh community hall connecting roads towards Polo area.

According to him, this road can ease the growing traffic congestion keepin in mind the upcoming National Games to be held in the state in 2022. “The proposal is also in line with the smart city project recently announced by the Centre besides safety and security of the residents of these areas in case of a natural calamity,” he said while urging the Dy CM to consider conducting a physical joint inspection of the road.
