MLCU to adopt Mawpun Kshaid village to usher development

Shillong, Dec 1: Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) social work department will adopt Mawpun Kshaid, a village 25 kilometers from Shillong to usher in development in the area. The focus will be to improve the healthcare, education, sanitation, drinking water and to liaise with other organizations.

The MLCU will adopt Mawpun Kshaid for 3 years.

A formal inaugural function adopting the village was held in Mawpun Kshaid Saturday where Fabian Lyngdoh, MDC and Chairman of the KHADC was the chief guest. Addressing the gathering he stressed the need for various organizations to converge for development. He also said that there is a great role for the MLCU to bring about changes in the village.

ICARE president Toki Blah who was also present on the inaugural function felt that health and education are important factors for the development of the people.He, however, said that the need is to encourage people to have a vision of their own.

ICAR director Dr. Ngachan Francis, who was a special guest, said that food security and nutrition security for people, especially the marginal, small, poor and landless farmers, is of utmost concern. He also felt that marketing of agricultural goods has always been a problem, which needs to be dealt.

Going into the specific Dr. Francis said there are many agricultural problems people face, but these cannot be dealt totally from an agricultural point of view but through social practices such as land tenure system which he felt is a hindrance to adopting scientific agricultural practices. He informed that there is a scope for capacity building for youths and other training programmes in ICAR that will benefit the people of the village.

The MLCU students belonging to social work department also performed a role play to address the issue of HIV/AIDS as December 1 is observed as World AIDS Day. The department had also done a baseline survey which was presented and will be a basis for the action plan.-By Our Reporter
