Rs. 5 crore demanded for teacher’s release

blockTURA, FEB 2: Unidentified miscreants on Sunday abducted Tura Christian Girls Higher Secondary School teacher Iqbal Rafique, 45, from his hometown Mancachar in Dhubri district of Assam.

Rafiqu had gone to Mankachar bus stand to collect a consignment dispatched in the Guwahati – Mancachar night bus, when the incident took place around 6:30 am.

Rafique teaches English at the School.

The family members told the police that the abductors have demanded a ransom of Rs. 5 crore. The abductors spoke fluent Bengali and have given two days deadline to make the payment.

The victim’s father, a retired teacher of Mancachar deficit college, tried to reason with the abductors but the caller insisted that the family give in to their ransom demand.

“We have launched an operation in our area to locate the victim and arrest the culprits”, said South West Garo hills SP R Muthu said.

The colleagues of Rafique on Monday filed an FIR at Ampati Police Station in South West Garo Hills.

Operations have simultaneously been launched in Mancachar area as well.

Police suspects involvement of militant groups or criminal gangs having links with anti-social elements from Bangladesh. Mancachar town is located very close to Bangladesh border.

Following the shocking abduction, the teaching fraternity and students of Tura Christian Girls Higher Secondary School have appealed for his safe and unconditional release.

“We appeal to the persons behind the abduction of Iqbal Rafique to release him safely and unconditionally. His safe release would be of great benefit for the students, society and the country as a whole”, said Irolline Momin, principal of the School in an appeal issued to the media.- From Our Correspondent
