Monsoon to delay seven MDCs bye-polls

SHILLONG, MAY 31: The bye-elections to the six vacant seats of the MDCs in KHADC and one in JHADC will be delayed because of the onset of monsoon in the state. The state district council affairs department is still examining the issue of holding the bye-elections during the rainy season.

State DCA minister HDR Lyngdoh said his department is still examining whethe to hold the bye-elections now or later.

Seven months have gone by since the seven MDCs seats were left vacant after the MDCs -who are also legislator- resigned from the district council fearing disqualification on the wake of holding of dual post issue.

When asked, the minister said the usual procedure to fill up  any vacant seat within a period of six months is not applicable in the case of elections to the autonomous district council.

Stating that nonetheless the vacant seats will have to be filled up, Lyngdoh said, “The government will announce the holding of the bye-elections within this year.”-By Our Reporter
