SHILLONG, JAN 5: Agitating Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) employees on Thursday temporary called off their indefinite strike after the management assured to release their pending salaries.

The decision was taken hours after the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) managing director A Nikhla invited the agitating employees for talks on Thursday.

The indefinite strike called by over 200 employees under the banner of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation Workers’ Union (MTCWU) paralyzed the functioning of the corporation.

All ticket counters were also seen closed during the hours of the strike.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, MTCWU general secretary K Rumnong said, “We have temporary suspended our indefinite strike to allow the management to address our grievances.”

He said the managing director during informed the delegation that the state government has agreed to release subsidy of Rs 90 lakh soon.

“She (Nikhla) assured us that the management would immediately submit its proposal to ensure the release of one month salary (out of 3 month pending salaries) to the employees,” Rumnong informed.

Over Rs 70 lakh is required for monthly of salaries to the employees of the corporation.

In December last year, the state government had released two-month salary after the employees took out similar strike against the delay to clear their five month salaries.

Rumnong informed that the management has also assured to find ways to ensure that the employees get their monthly salary.

MTCWU also urged the management to propose to the state government to increase the subsidy and annual plan for the corporation.

Rumnong informed that the employees will resume work from tomorrow and counter to facilitate the passengers who have already booked advance ticket for Silchar, Karimganj, Tura and others will be opened from 4pm today.

Rumnong however warned that they will continue the strike if the management fails to fulfill its promise.
