Mukul is making a big mistake: Mominin

SHILLONG, MAY 17: National People’s Party (NPP) legislator from Phulbari SG Esmatur Mominin (Rohibul) today said the former chief minister Mukul Sangma has allegedly made a “big mistake” by fielding his own daughter for the May 28 Ampati bye-election.

Speaking to reporters, Mominin said that Mukul should have given a chance to some leaders who have supported him to be the candidate of the Congress from the seat.

“The two communities – Hajong and Koch – are thinking that after having supported Mukul for the last 25 years, he should have given a chance to their leaders to contest but instead he is fielding his own daughter which is not acceptable to the majority. The Garo community are also thinking in the same way,” he said.

On the other hand, Mominin, who is also chairman of the Forest Development Corporation of Meghalaya (FDCM), pointed out that Mukul’s daughter Miani D Shira is from Tura and not from the constituency.

He claimed that if the two factors work then the upcoming bye-election for the seat will be in favour of the NPP.

“The NPP have a strong chance to win the seat due to these two factors,” Mominin said while admitting that the fight is going to be a tough one and it will not be easy for both the parties.

NPP candidate Clement G Momin will take on Miani D Shira, who is the Congress candidate for the bye-election to the Ampati seat.

The Phulbari legislator, who is going to campaign for the party in Ampati, also claimed that the party candidate was a former school teacher and people have high respect for him in the constituency.

The Election was necessitated after Mukul Sangma resigned from Ampati after having won from two seats in the February 27 elections.

The results for the bye-election will be declared on May 31.
