NEHU campus in Nongstoin

SHILLONG, DEC 6: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said the government will work out with the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to set up the university campus in Nongstoin, district headquarters of West Khasi Hills District.

“The government would work with NEHU, as done for Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills so that a NEHU campus for almost all the departments which have degree courses is set up in Nongstoin,” Sangma said while speaking at the inauguration of the Girls’ Hostel of Nongstoin college and also the Music Institute on Saturday.

The Girls’ Hostel was funded by UGC, while the Music Institute has been funded by State Art & Culture for traditional music and dances.

According to Sangma, it is the desire of the government that every district in the state must have institution for primary, elementary, secondary, higher secondary and higher education. He said that his government has re-strategized its investment in respect of education and have maintained that every district must be self-sufficient in education despite constraints.

Sangma said,” “We have worked hard to locate resources for the sector.”

Speaking of the recent agreement signed with the ADB for starting special investments in the state, Sangma said human capital development is one of them adding that his government would upscale this investment and extend it to higher education including degree and post graduation.

As far as Nongstoin college is concerned, Sangma lauded the approach taken by the leaders of the area in management of the college and urged the deputy commissioner,F Kharlyngdoh, who is also the chairman of the governing body to prepare a new proposal for the development of the college saying that the government would consider their proposal this financial year itself.

Sangma urged upon the education department to expeditiously implement the government’s initiative to create hostels in every district for students coming from rural areas as land has been made available.  He also informed that it is the commitment of the government to have science and commerce courses in all district capitals.

Since the people of Nongstoin wants the institution to be within the management and control of the people themselves, the first sanction for science stream under deficit system should go to Nongstoin college, Sangma announced.

Admiring the beauty of the place, Sangma asked the deputy commissioner to call a meeting of all concerned in the area to plan up something for further beautification of Nongstoin saying that Nongstoin-Nongkhnum is one of the target areas of the government for investment in developing as a tourist destination.

Earlier, Sangma also released a book titled “Impact of Globalization on Traditional Political Institutions North East India” written by RK. Satapathy and the college magazine on the occasion.- By Our Reporter
