SHILLONG, AUG 7: North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) teachers on  Friday joined the nationwide hunger strike demanding compliance to their 13-point charter of demands which includes formation of the UGC  7th Pay Review Committee.

The hunger strike was staged at the NEHU campus by the teachers under the banner of the North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHU) to support FEDCUTA and AIFUCTO, which have called for the nationwide protest.

The protest came after the failure of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to comply with the representations submitted by the FEDCUTA & AIFUTO since last year.

“We are demanding the formation of the UGC 7th Pay Review Committee,” a member of the NEHUTA told reporters. According to him, the teachers of higher education sector of India are worried that the UGC  7th pay review committee has not yet been constituted.

On the demand to remove anomalies, he said that earlier UGC had decided to take up with HRD ministry on the removal of anomalies as per the recommendations of the Anomalies Committee.

However, it is more than two years that there is no definite order regarding many issues. The UGC decided in its 497th meeting to roll out the implementation of Regulation 2010 (Category III) for CAS, he said.

“We are still waiting for UGC order to the effect,” he said adding the teachers are also demanding immediate scrapping on Fof API system as it has led to downgrading of research and teaching.

Other  demands put forth by the teachers includes – finalization of Ph.D Regulation 2009, roll back of CBCS and Central Universities Bill 2013, withdrawal of pension scheme 2004, the resolve of anomalies of 6th pay commission, consultation of teachers for new education policies and extension of dates for refresher course and orientation programme. – By Our Reporter
