TURA, MAR 6: Meghalaya chief minister Dr. Mukul Sangma laid the foundation stone for the construction of 17 km stretch of approach road from Chokpot to Jetragre and also launched the second phase of Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS-II) in South Garo Hills at Chokpot in the presence of parliamentary secretaries Cherak W. Momin, Brigady Marak, W.D. Sangma, Noverfield Marak, Sengnam Marak, Legislator from Chokpot Bluebell Sangma, and MHIS managing director MR Synrem.
The government has sanctioned Rs. 17.64 crore under NLCPR for the construction and black-topping of the approach road.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the chief minister said that the government is aware of the backwardness of the area and problems being faced by the people and would try to meet their needs according to their priority. “The people of the area have suffered for over two decades. We are going to ensure that the people of this region receive their share of development”, he said.
He urged the people of the area to extend their cooperation to the officials engaged in the construction to ensure speedy completion of the project and also appealed to the people to be generous in giving their lands along the side of the road for beautification.
The chief minister also informed the gathering that government has increased its budget for construction of roads by over 10 times, which will enable an atmosphere for accelerated growth improving surface connectivity. The roads leading to places like Siju and Gasuapara will also besanctioned soon, he assured.
On MHIS-II, the chief minister said that the target was cent percent coverage, including all those enrolled in the electoral list.
Dwelling on the government’s initiatives to improve the economy of the state, Sangma called upon the people interested in Agar plantation to submit their names to the district administration, saying that the government would provide the saplings so that plantation can be within this month of August.
South Garo hills deputy commissioner SN Marak chaired the function, while ACE, PWD (Roads) Western Zone, MR Sangma and Medical & Health Officer, Dr. Bijoy Deb Burman briefed the gathering on the approach road project and MHIS, respectively. – From Our Correspondent
