NEIGRIHMS director apologizes to HYC for accusing them of being aggressive

Director of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Dr Nalin Mehta Wednesday had to apologize to leaders and members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) after they threatened to lock down his office alleging them of being “aggressive with a motive to create law and order”.

A delegation of the HYC led by its president Roy Kupar Synrem had gone to NEIGRIHMS based on the invitation of Dr Mehta to discuss the recruitment process and other issues related to the institute. However, as soon as the delegation entered his office chamber to their surprise, the Director started accusing them of being “aggressive”.

Angered by the behaviour of the Director towards them, the HYC leaders thumped the table and broke some glasses in the office before walking out in protest.

Immediately, the HYC demanded the Director to apologize, failing which they will lock down his office.

Soon after the incident, police personnel were also deployed to prevent any law and order breakdown.

Later, the Director of NEIGRIHMS came out and tendered his apology to the leaders of the HYC and requested them to have a meeting with him. Dr Mehta was heard saying “I am sorry if I have offended you.”

However, the HYC leaders refused to continue with the meeting and asked the director to fix it on another date.

Upon the threat, the premises of the director’s office and the hospital area were surrounded by police personnel and district administration who came to make sure that no law and order situation arose at the premises of the hospital.

In order to make sure that no law and order occurs, the district administration had to step in and convince the Director to come out to meet the leaders of HYC and apologize to them about his behavior in his office chambers.

Speaking to media persons, Synrem said that the council decided to protest against the rude behaviour of the Director of NEIGRIHMS, who accused its members of being aggressive with an attempt to create a law and order situation in the hospital premises.

“We were shocked at the behaviour of the Director, who instead of initiating discussion, had directly accused us of being aggressive by referring to the recent protest staged by us in the institute on January 19, 2024,” he said.

Synrem informed that the HYC had written to the Director on five issues which pertains to the recruitment of nurses by Nursing Officer Recruitment Common Eligibility Test (NORCET), outsourcing agency from the state, 80% reservation for local in Group C&D, and one time policy for nurses who have served for many years in the hospital besides many others.

“The meeting was not fixed by the HYC but we were called by the Director himself but we were shocked when the meeting was about to start, the Director directly accused us of being aggressive and that we only wanted to create law and order, this is unacceptable. If he can treat us like that, imagine how he treats the public, especially those who come to seek medical attention in this hospital,” said Synrem.

Synrem said that though the director has apologized yet the council will not meet him immediately but will wait for another call from the director to fix a meeting to discuss the issues pertaining to the interest of the indigenous people of Meghalaya who are working in NEIGRIHMS.

He added that the HYC will not tolerate such behavior from any directors of any central institute who are operating in Meghalaya, be it NEIGRIHMS, NIIT, IIM or IHM.
