New Polo market stalled

SHILLONG, OCT 15: The state government is toying with the idea of shifting the construction of the Rs 21.41 crore new Polo market project to the New Shillong Township (NST) as it is facing litigations and opposition to the implementation of the new market in Polo area.

The project was schedule to take off in January 2012 but litigation by the godown owners who were asked to shift their godown temporarily to facilitate the construction work grounded the projected deadline for beginning the construction work.

The godown owners had filed a petition in the court challenging the Municipal Board order to shift the godown to enable the construction work.

Meghalaya urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said,  “The main reason for the delay is because some people have gone to court and are opposed to the idea of the new market.’

Lyngdoh, however, informed that the state government is examining the feasibility and possibility of shifting the Polo Market Complex to Mawdiangdiang (NST).

The market complex at Polo was hand over to NBCC, which is the implementing agency, last year but as litigation is pending in the court it could not go ahead with the construction work and the state government is now left with no option but to ensure that the project is implemented in some other places. The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) had also expressed its opposition to the construction of the complex in other locations also.- By Our Reporter
