Ngos to meet soon

SHILLONG, JULY 15: The thirteen pro-ILP ngos which spearheaded the Inner Line Permit (ILP) agitations last year are likely to convene a meeting following the recent arrest warrant issued by the special court constituted by the state government against the KSU and FKJGP leaders even as police said that they would soon execute the court order.

The arrest warrant was also issued against the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) president GH Kharshanlor, an official said.

On Tuesday morning, Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) president Joe Marwein and KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa appeared before the officer- in-charge of the Lumdiengjri police station after the arrest warrant were issued against them, police said.

The special court constituted by the state government exclusively to deal with cases related to the ILP agitations last year had issued the arrest warrant after the leaders of the ngos failed to appear in the cases charge sheeted by the police.

East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said, “We will have to execute the court order and produce the leaders before the court.”  He informed that the court has given a specific date to make the arrest.

According to Kharkhrang, the arrest warrant by the court was issued to the different police stations who earlier had issued several summon to the leaders of the ngos pertaining to different cases related to the ILP agitations.

As many as 86 cases were registered by the police. These cases are related to arsons, stone-pelting, murder and other criminal activities that had taken place during the four months long agitations sponsored by the pro ILP ngos demanding implementation of the ILP.

Meanwhile, the ngos have decided to meet soon to discuss the issue pertaining to the arrest warrant issued by the special court even after reaching to a mutual agreement with the state government to come up with a comprehensive mechanism to curb inflow of illegal influx into the state.

“We will soon meet on the issue in the coming days,” FKJGP Joe Marwein said after appearing in the police station here.

Earlier on June 4, the special court constituted by the state government to try cases related to ILP agitations last year had issued summoned notices to the presidents and general secretaries of the thirteen ngos to appear in the court in persons or through their advocate on July 8.

However, majority of the leaders of the ngos including the KSU and FKJGP failed to appear either themselves or through the lawyers before the hearing held on July 8.- By Our Reporter
