SHILLONG, MAR 25: The Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Operators Association has expresses its gratitude to the National Green Tribunal for hearing its plea on the difficulties to transport coal for a period of 45 days and has allowed transportation of coal till May 31 and payment of royalty within  three weeks time.

Association president Augustine Shangpru on Wednesday informed that only in its order pronounced today the NGT has allowed transportation of coal till May 31 and has also asked the state to submit it mining plan in collaboration with the central government within 6 weeks time after which future course of action with regard to coal mining in Meghalaya will be decided.

The NGT has earlier issued order to transport coal for a limited period of 45 days only. Shangpru informed that the association had appealed for extension of timeframe which was granted in today’s hearing in Delhi.

Shangpru informed that the NGT during the course of the hearing on Wednesday had categorically sought from  the association’s legal counsel from Indus Law Associates, New Delhi of both the orders passed in its civil appeals filed previously before the Supreme Court and the contents of the same have been duly recorded in the order passed by the tribunal

Shangpru said the NGT has also allowed the persons who have previously deposited the royalty, but were unable to transport coal due to the short time space during which transportation is  now permitted to transport the coal on production of the challan that was issued previously.

Shangpru further informed that the NGT has also directed the state government  in strict and categorical terms, to make weighbridges in the state operational within a period of four weeks, without any default and created Meghalaya Environment Protection Fund.

Ten percent of total value of consignment shall be deposited towards the above fund in addition to royalty payable under the rules of the state govt.

Shangpru also informed that the issue of Sixth Schedule was also noted by the NGT while passing the detailed order.- By Our Reporter
