SHILLONG, JUNE 26: A wanted Nigerian national Moses Kelenneji Chukwuemeka was on Friday brought to Shillong where he will be produced and tried in the lower court for smuggling of heroin in  2011.

Chukwuemeka, a former footballer, was arrested by New Delhi police two months ago. He is wanted for smuggling 645 gram of brown sugar worth over Rs 20 lakh in 2011 along with a local from Shillong.

The smuggled narcotic was seized in Shillong in 2011 but the custom preventive unit failed to nab Chukwuemeka  and he remained untraceable till two month ago when he was arrested by the Delhi police.

“We have issued red alert for his arrest and two months ago, he was detained by the Delhi police,” Customs Preventive Superintendent D Bhattacharjee informed reporters on Friday.  He said Chukwuemeka was brought to Shillong on Friday and he will be produce before the court of the District and Session Judge on Saturday.

The  custom official, however, refused to disclose more information regarding the case as he said investigation is going to start. He said,”  This is an old case but still there are other members who are involved so nothing can be disclose right now.”

The custom officer informed with Chukwuemeka, another person from Shillong identified as Giddion Syiem was also involved in the 2011 case adding that Syiem is in police custody.

The custom official  said  Chukwuemeka was pretending to be a football player and is in India through a working Visa. He said the Nigerian national is a big catch for the custom department, he said, “Law has a long arm if you abscond today we will still catch you and there is nowhere to hide from the law.”

The custom official said with the Nigerian arrest the message should be clear that the Department of Narcotic is very strict, there is no leniency for narcotic dealers and if you go missing for 4 or 5 years it does not matter as the depart will catch them finally.

According to the custom official, smuggling of narcotics is harming the society and it is important to get these people behind bars. He also said that there might be links between the Nigerian and the locals but so far nothing can be disclosed.- By Our Reporter
