Shillong, Dec 6: Of the six hundred houses for the urban poor, ninety-six houses were inaugurated at Nongmynsong under the Basic Services to the Urban Poor Scheme by Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh Thursday. The project was initiated in 2007.

The scheme objective is to provide affordable, safe, self owned, adequate shelter to the urban poor people in the state. However as Lyngdoh informed during the inauguration of the completed houses, there were problem galore that put a spanner in completing the project on time.

Lyngdoh, nonetheless, said, “The efforts of the people turned dream into reality”. She especially made a point to mention the local legislator and minister AL Hek, the Rangbah Shnong and the executive committee members of the Shnong and officials of the urban affairs department who together saw that the project saw the light of the day.

Lyngdoh promised that by March, 2013 another 96 houses will be completed and it will alleviate the shelter problem of the poor and help improve their life style. She also informed that the project aims at providing safe drinking water and proper electricity which hopefully will complete on time.

Lyngdoh, however, warned, “The houses provided under the scheme should be used for what it is meant and should not be leashed out.”  She also did not forget to pat the land owner on the back saying that the owner willingly gave their plot of land to start off the project.

Hek also echoed Lyngdoh’s opinion that the housing will benefit the urban poor and urged those who will be occupying to maintain the houses properly and make the best use of it.

The housing project is divided into two phase of 300 house each. The total cost of the project is 30.44 crore (Rs 13.76 crores Phase I and Rs 16.68 crores Phase II).

Project coordinator Wanda Syiem informed that till now Rs 21 crore has been spend for housing project. Each household has got one sitting room, one kitchen, one bedroom and attached bedroom and these houses are as per the central government guidelines.

Syiem said that at first the occupants are given a temporary occupancy right which means if the occupants fulfill all the guidelines as per agreement they will continue to stay and become the rightful owners.  But, she also warned, if the occupants rent the house or sell it to any person the ownership of the house will be taken away and given to other less fortunate family. –By Our Reporter
