No “secret fund,” says home department

Shillong, August 9: The Meghalaya home department has claimed that it doesn’t have “ secret fund” maintained by the administrative department of the police. Replying to the RTI filed by the Civil Society Women Organisation (CSWO) Agnes Kharshiing.

Kharshiing had filed an RTI asking for details of expenditure incurred for hiring Supreme Court advocate KTS Tulsi who represented the police department in the Fullmoon jailbreak case and his subsequent killing.

The expenditure incurred on the supreme advocate so far is Rs. 73, 64, 500. The advocate charges Rs. 3, 50, 000 per appearance and he has appeared about thirteen times during the judicial inquiry in the jailbreak case.

The RTI also revealed that the home department doesn’t have copy of the contract between Tulsi and the police department. Whenever the advocate came to Shillong to defend the police during the hearing of the commission, he stayed in Shillong posh hotels like Pinewood, RoyaL Heritage, Polo Towers, Hotel Centre Point and Hotel Alpine Continental.

Kharshiing wondered why the state government had to spend such huge amount to defend the police when it has its own advocate general. She said, “ Is the government saying that its advocate general is incompetent to defend the case.”- By Our Reporter
