Nongstoin polls peaceful, 81.16 % turnout

NONGSTOIN, NOV 21: Voting for the 32- Nongstoin Assembly constituency bye-poll was held on Saturday with 81.16 percent voters turning out to cast their voters in the 39 polling station across the district.

The bye-poll to Nongstoin was necessitated after its representative and HSPDP supremo Hopingstone Lyngdoh died in September, 2015.  Lyngdoh won the Nongstoin seat for a record nine terms..

Long queues of voters were seen in most of the polling stations waiting eagerly for for their turn to cast their votes.

A total of four contestants are in the fray, including ex-MDC, Gabriel Wahlang of INC, Diosstarness Jyndiang of HSPDP, Mosklandar Marngar of UDP and Dr. Fenella Lyngdog Nonglait, who is fighting as an independent.

The  39 polling stations has a total of 29,173 voters (14503 (male) and 14670 (female).

Elaborate security and other arrangements were put in place to  ensure smooth conduct of the polling that started since 7am to 4 pm. The bye-election was reported peacefully in the entire Nongstoin constituency.

West Khasi hills returning office S Kharlyngdoh said that the election passed off peacefully in all the 39 polling station.

The result of the bye-polls will be declared on November 24.– By Our Reporter
