SHILLONG, DEC 5: Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP led NDA government fights against corruption by demonetising the Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes, Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma foresees that this will only open scope for ‘bigger corruption’ and create ‘bigger mafias.’

Sangma who is heading a Congress led state coalition government on Monday told reporters,“This exercise (demonetization) is opening scope for bigger corruption and it will create bigger mafias.”

Pointing out the chaotic situation across the state post the demonetization decision of Modi that also saw the loss of precious lives, Sangma said, “As I have said from day one, this reflects complete bankruptcy of ideas and real arrogance.”

Sangma berated the Modi government by saying, “They ( NDA government) didn’t even think it necessary to condole the loss of lives and say sorry…one should know everybody’s life is precious.”

Sangma said the centre failed to do its groundwork before implementing such a gigantic programme.

Sangma also alerted the people saying they now need to be more careful as with the printing of the new Rs 2000 and Rs 500 notes, fake notes are also in circulation now. He claimed,“A lady from Tura showed me three fake Rs 2000 currency notes.”

Sangma felt that such gigantic exercise of banning the Rs 1000 and Rs 500 denomination notes, the country will face challenging circumstances.

Sangma however refused to link the demonetization with politics and said, “Let us not link this to politics…we are talking of the situation faced by the people and what is important is to create a strong deterrent.”

Sangma also informed that the state government will write to the union government on this issue.
