SHILLONG, JULY 4: The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has come under tremendous pressure with the growing demand for creation of new Civil Sub-Divisions from several quarters in the state.

Another legislator, who this time is from the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has also asked the state government to consider upgadation of the Patharkhmah Administrative Unit into a full-fledged Civil Sub-Division.

A delegation led by NPP MLA of Jirang constituency Sosthenes Sohtun on Wednesday met and submitted a memorandum to the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong requesting for his intervention into the matter.

“This is the first time that we are placing our demand to the government for its necessary consideration as it is time for the Patharkmah Administrative Unit to also be upgraded into a civil sub-division,” Sohtun told reporters after the meeting.

He said since its inception, the Administrative Unit has been providing good services to the people of Western part of Ri-Bhoi District for the past 20 years.

Sohtun however said with the passage of time, the population and villages have also been increased and causing difficulty for the Administrative Unit to cater to a very vast area.

“Moreover, the people of my constituency have to come a long way to Nongpoh for official works,” the MLA said while pointing out that people especially those residing along the border areas have to travel over 100 kms to reach Nongpoh.

He also said furthermore, the area is lacking behind in term of development which include road communication, health, drinking water and others.

Asked, Sohtun said that the deputy chief minister has assured the delegation that the government would take necessary steps to ensure the government and administration is brought closer to the people.

“He (Tynsong) told us that we should not lose hope as the government would take up necessary step,” he said.

Reacting to another query, the Jirang legislator said that he has full faith and confident on the present state government and the question for him to resign as MLA does not arise at all.

The demand for creation of new civil sub-divisions in the different parts of the state came following the state government’s decision to upgrade the Ranikor Administrative Unit into a Civil Sub-Division, which also led to the resignation of former senior Congress leader, Martin M Danggo as MLA.

Earlier, three opposition Congress MLAs – Himalaya M Shangpliang of Mawsynram, George B Lyngdoh of Umroi and Process T Sawkmie of Mawlai – have demanded the government to consider creation of new civil sub-divisions in their respective constituencies.
