Open letter to HM

SHILLONG, JUNE 13: In view of the ongoing turmoil in the state over the railway project, a member of the opposition National People’s Party (NPP) today demanded the state government to invite the anti-railway group for talks.

This came a day after the banned Khasi rebel outfit – Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) – has threatened to support the group opposing the railway line in Byrnihat, by supplying improvise explosive device (IED).

In an open letter to the Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh here, NPP member and Advocate Erwin K Syiem Sutnga said, “The state government has to initiate talks immediately forsaking ego and pride in the larger interest of peace and safety of the people of this state.”

“In fact this contentious issue should be discussed and all apprehensions should be addressed in the proper manner to the satisfaction of all stakeholders,” he added.

Sutnga, who also claimed to be recommended candidate from North Shillong in 2018, said there is a serious concern that both tribal and non-tribal communities may get caught in the ongoing fight between the KSU and the state government.

He was referring to the HNLC’s statement which also sought the immediate release of the KSU activists, who were arrested in connection with the violent protest against the construction of the railway line in Ronghona, Ri Bhoi district.

Stating that this will add more fuel to the fire especially in view of the current law and order situation arising out of the ongoing protest, he said, This (HNLC offer support) is not to be taken lightly.

He said the issue relating to the construction of a Rail Head at Byrnihat and the ongoing civil works has created a situation which has exploded into violence and may dangerously impact against innocent people.

“Therefore, the matter is left to your wisdom but only remember that any further worsening of the situation will only be blamed on the MUA led government in the state of Meghalaya,” Sutnga said in the letter.

Stating that Meghalaya is in a stage of economic crisis due to the NGT ban on coal mining, he said that one of the key economic sectors that will be adversely affected by an atmosphere of insecurity will be the tourism sector.

According to him, of late tourism has created many employment opportunities for people especially in Shillong, East Khasi Hills District, West Khasi Hills District and other areas, who would otherwise be left without jobs.

It may be mentioned here, the state has witnessed series incidents of arson and petrol bomb attacks on vehicles and government properties following the May 27-violent protest at the construction site of the railway line.
