SHILLONG, JUL 21: The opposition Congress on Wednesday demanded for a judicial probe to be monitored by the Supreme Court into the alleged revelations that dozens of Indians were potential targets of snooping by an Israeli-made spyware.
Addressing media persons, Congress spokesperson and Rangsakona legislator Zenith M Sangma has also announced the decision of the party to join hands with the nationwide protest against this unconstitutional act by the BJP-led government at the Centre on Thursday.
“We are protesting across the nation and demand a judicial probe monitored by the Supreme Court to unearth the truth and punish the guilty,” Sangma said.
He said shocking news reports which disclosed illegal and unconstitutional hacking of cell phones of constitutional functionaries, Union cabinet ministers, present & former head of India’s security forces, senior leader of opposition, journalist, lawyers and activists have exposed the dubious and deplorable action of the BJP government.
He added that it’s also been reported that the Spyware Pegasus has also been used to hack cell phones in the run-up to the 2019 General Election to Parliament.
Stating that the Pegasus Spyware and all NSO products are exclusively sold to the government only, Sangma said, “It is thus clear that the Government of India and its agencies bought the Spyware to hack the phones of opposition leaders, journalists, lawyers and activists.”
According to him, the Pegasus Spyware is able to turn on phone cameras and microphones to capture all activities in the vicinity of the phone.
Thus, snooping through alleged technology Pegasus on the citizens is treacherous and unconstitutional as it is a violation against the fundamental rights to privacy, he said adding “Therefore, the Indian National Congress condemns the unconstitutional act by the incumbent government at the centre.”
The Congress leader said when this kind of modus operandi is found, it can always be assumed that the prominent leaders from any state across the country may be targeted.
He further claimed that there are many leaders of the Congress who have been snooped upon adding “We are talking about the misuse of power by the government at the Centre but how many people from the Congress that are not with us at the moment.”
Asked, Sangma said that if the demand is not attended to then the Congress leadership will decide on its next course of action against this act by the Centre.
