SHILLONG, MAR 17: Opposition on Tuesday hammered the state government for its failure to trace and arrest the absconding state cop Nurul Islam who had allegedly raped two minor sisters in South West Garo hills police station in 2013.

NPP legislator James K Sangma said during the ongoing budget session of the assembly that the state government must make extra effort  to trace and arrest Islam and store the faith of the people in the police department.

Sangma said Islam has been absconding for a very long time. The state government should put in more efforts to apprehend him as failure to arrest him has put the lowered the confidence of the people is the police.

Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri replied that a special team had made its last visit last year to which  Sangma queried whether he is being made to believe that the state government has given up in locating Islam.

Warjri, however, was quick to say, “No, it is not a fact as police are making all out efforts to nab the culprit.”

Sangma wanted to know whether the home department is contemplating to provide reward for any information provided on the absconded cop’s whereabouts by the public to which Warjri replied that the government will examine the suggestion.

To a query raised by UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh about the number of non  Meghalayan police serving in the state as he pointed out  that it is mention that Islam hails from Barpeta, Assam, Warjri said that the state government will look into the matter.

Opposition leader Donkupar Roy also sought the profile of Nurul Islam and Warjri assured to place it on the floor of the assembly.

Roy also insisted that government put up the latest photo of Nurul Islam in the website.  Warjri responded by saying that the absconding cop photo was published in newspapers, both local and national papers and the home department will put up the same in the website. – By Our Reporter
