TURA, SEPT 5: Peeved at the police operations against the militants in Garo hills, the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) on Friday issued a threat to trigger off serial blasts in Meghalaya’s Garo hills if government continues its operation against militant outfits.

“The ball is in government’s court to decide whether they stop or continue with police operations”, a GNLA statement issued on Friday warned. The statement said that the emergent meeting called by its commander-in-chief Sohan D. Shira has  vowed to execute serial blast in Garo hills.

“This decision was taken as police have continued its operation in the jungles of Garo hills”, said Savio Marak, senior cadre of the outfit, in the release.  The statement also stated that chief minister Mukul Sangma and all the legislators of Garo hills will have to own up responsibility for the blasts.

“Sohan Shira is not happy with Mukul Sangma, who has sidelined all organisations of Garo hills by inviting the HNLC for talks”, said Marak.

“The chief minister invited all militant groups in Garo hills and Khasi hills to join mainstream, but at the same time he (Mukul) has passed an order to intensify operation in Garo hills, but initiate process for  talks with the HNLC”, Marak said questioning, “Why the government is being so naive and impartial?”

Stating that the government treated Garo hills outfits differently, the GNLA statement said, “When all groups want to negotiate and come to mainstream, why is this opposite attitude shown towards us? Is it a kind of punishment?”

Reiterating its decision to execute series of blasts in Garo hills, the GNLA statement said, “We are forced to take this decision due to government’s adamant attitude.  We will blast serially all government (including Congress) offices in all the five districts of Garo hills”.

The outfit has also demanded release of its chairman Champion R. Sangma and general secretary Dalbin N. Marak who are in jail so as to initiate talks.

“Right policy will bring peace and harmony but drastic and violent approach will only bring violence. There will be more bloodshed. Government must not forget that many Garo youths in Garo hills will join us for the cause of Garoland”, the GNLA statement warned.

Stating that chief minister will be responsible for its actions, the GNLA said, “It is up to the chief minister to choose and decide now.”- From Our Correspondent
