‘Police crippling peace’

SHILLONG, AUG 23: The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) accused the Meghalaya police for crippling the peace process. In a statement issued on Sunday, HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said, “The police department is creating one of the greatest obstacles to peace in the Khasi – Jaintia region. We see every day how the police cripples the process.”

He suggested that the police must not intervene in this conflict and advocate the idea that peace is not possible.

Nongtraw said that the police department does not hesitate to eliminate or arrest its cadres, so can the outfit ask them not to arrest nor harm its cadres. Stating that the police are very bad with mathematics, he said, “On the one hand they claim that we are a group of 25 individuals whereas they keep on arresting our cadres every month.”

According to him, if they start calculating the number of cadres arrested (hundreds) and eliminated since the year 2003 till date they will get a proper figure of whether the outfit have ‘increased’ or ‘decreased’.

Therefore, Nongtraw said, “If the state government believes in the statements made by the police department then we are afraid to say that peace shall be crippled under the police feet.”

He further questioned what about fake encounters, murders, rape, extortions committed by the police and also the Mookhep firing?

Asking how many people have the HNLC eliminated or killed so far since the peace process started and whether the outfit was involved in kidnapping, he claimed “Nil” adding then why the outfit is accused of being violent?

Nongtraw also said the  police must stop calling the armed insurgency terrorists because this blocks dialogue and it also shows a double standard regarding political violence in the region.” According to him, the HNLC is not fighting for integration, nor it is fighting for separation but it is fighting for recognition as a nation, a free Hynñiewtrep state.- By Our Reporter
