Police, GNLA exchange fire

SHILLONG, JAN 20: A heavy exchange of fire took place on Saturday between the police and Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres at Sakalgre village in West Garo hills district.

Acting on tip off, the SWAT team of the police swung into action and spotted the GNLA group led by Savio, an area commander and an ex police personnel from the 1st MLP battalion, at a village in West Garo hills district where the encounter started.

However, police said, Savio and his aides managed to escape taking advantage of the thick forest cover nearby the village. There was no casualty reported from the police but police suspects that some of the GNLA militants might have been injured during the encounter.

Police have intensified operations in and around the area to traced down the militants. – By Our Reporter
