Police intensify operation against drug syndicates in the city

SHILLONG, MAY 7: The state police have intensified its operations against drug syndicates operating in the state’s capital even as it warned house-owners from allowing their premises to be used for commission of such offences.

In a statement issued here, East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police Davis NR Marak said that considering the seriousness and prevalence of drug related crimes, the district executive force (DEF) has intensified its operation against drug syndicates operating in the city.

He however said it was also observed that many drug traffickers are operating out of rented premises in the city.

In this regard, the SP said, “House-owners are advised to take necessary precautions while renting out their premises as allowing premises to be used for commission of such offences may make owners liable under Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.”

He also sought the active cooperation of citizens in fighting drug syndicates operating in the City.

Highlighting the achievement, the SP informed that as many as five persons have been arrested so far in this connection.

The Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) staff apprehended Slander Syiem (35) of Tyrsad village on April 27, while he was selling ganja in Paltan Bazar area, and recovered from his possession 1kg 340gm of ganja

The following day, the ANTF along with police from Madanrting PS Staff also apprehended one lady Sapthangi Chhak from Thembasuk, Madanrting and recovered from her possession one plastic box and 5 golden tobacco tin containing suspected heroin weighing a total weight of 16.50grms and a cash of Rs 16,465.

Further on her leading arrested another person identified as Shokhomang from his rented house at Demthring and recovered yellow colour sack from behind his apartment which was suspected to be thrown out by the accused on seeing the police approaching his house, and from the said sack recovered 13 soap cases containing suspected heroin weighing a total weight of 162 grams.

The ANTF along with Madanrting police on May 4 further apprehended one drug peddler Khualsuamtak (23) of Lumjingsuk Block – A, and recovered from his possession one soap case containing inside 12.19 grams of suspected heroin.

Later on his leading arrested another person namely Henry Neihsel (33) from his rented house at Lumjingsuk Block- A, and recovered from his resident 20 soap cases and 32 golden tobacco tin container all  containing inside suspected heroin which on weighing give a total weight of 278grams and cash of Rs 2,14,400.

According to the SP, heroin of more than 250 grams is classified as Commercial Quantity as per NDPS Act.
