Police outposts demanded

SHILLONG, MAR 30: The Pangam Raliang Border Development Committee (PRBDC) on Monday demanded setting up of two police outposts to ensure peace and adequate security in two villages falling under disputed Block-I area in West Jaintia hills district.

“We demand that the government immediately set up two police outposts at Moolber village and Mukhroh village in order to ensure peace and security to the people living in the border areas,” PRBDC, a conglomeration of ngos and traditional headmen, said in a letter submitted to the Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri on Monday.

The letter said, “The villagers for decades have been living under fear because of repeated atrocities committed by various militant outfits from across Assam.”

According to the committee, complaints have recently been received from the villagers that they are still living in fear and that they are repeatedly receiving threats and extortion demands from different militant outfits operating along the border.

“However, the villagers are helpless as such crimes are being committed because the nearest police station in Raliang is about 25-30 kilometers from Moolber village and the road connectivity too is very poor in the area,” the PRBDC in the letter.

The committee further stated that recently a top police officer from Jaintia hills during a routine patrol was also injured after he was shot at, by Assam police personnel because of mistaken identity adding this only proves the volatile and tense situation in the area.

The letter also informed that Mukhroh village has been neglected for decades in terms of security because the village is located more than 30 km from Nartiang village where a police outpost is located.

“This village also lies along the inter-state border with Assam and has been witnessing huge militant activities for years now due to the thick forest cover,” the committee said while requesting immediate intervention of the home department into the issue.- By Our Reporter
