Police to charge-sheet soon

SHILLONG, SEPT 25: East Khasi police will soon file chargesheets in many of the cases related to arsons and other crimes committed during the ongoing agitations sponsored by several ngos demanding for implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.  “We would submit charge-sheets in many of the cases at the earliest,” East Khasi hills district SP M Kharkhrang told reporters on Wednesday.

As many as fifty-five cases have been registered under the Meghalaya maintenance of public order (MMPO) Act relating to assaults, attempted arsons, mischief and others. Forty volunteers of the pro ILP ngos have been arrested.  Ngos and non-Congress political parties have been demanding the immediate release of the arrested volunteers of the pro ILP ngos who are spearheading the agitation.

Kharkhrang informed that the police are building up evidence against these cases adding that if those arrested wants bail, they can always apply. He said, “The police job is to ensure that these cases be charge-sheeted.” He also said that the police have also identified sensitive areas in the city like Nongmynsong and Pynthor and most of the arrests have been made from these areas. He informed, “It is only after the arrest that incidents have stopped in these areas.”- By Our Reporter
