Police’s conspiracy:HNLC

SHILLONG, DEC 4: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) accused the state police of adopting “diplomatic conspiracies” against the outfit, which it says is a move to derail the ongoing peace process.

The statement came two days after the police claimed that a senior cadre of the HNLC had surrendered before them.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw however said, “The statement of the police department about the escape and surrender is a ‘planned conspiracy to create misunderstandings among the cadres of the HNLC and to sow the seeds of disunity.”

According to him, Omet Phanbuh @ Cris was officially released from his duty six months ago by the HNLC due to ill health problems.

“The HNLC leadership had taken the decision based on humanitarian grounds and requests from his family members and not as claimed by the police,” Nongtraw said.  He further stated that in the year 2004 also the police department had tried their level best to derail the peace processes.

“It has also come to the notice of the HNLC that several high ranking police officers had used the surrendered cadres to extort money in the name of the HNLC,” the publicity secretary said adding “This is also orchestrated in order to derail the ongoing peace process that is in its infant stage.”

He said  the police department should not indulge in  this kind of practice, as it might backfire and thereby hamper the peace process,” adding “If the police department is hell bent upon creating fabricated stories then we are afraid to say that we shall further strengthen our military wing and thereby recruit more cadres.”

Pointing out that the outfit had agreed upon the terms of the government under the leadership of Mukul Sangma to come to the negotiating table and enable peace, Nongtraw however said, “But this kind of drama enacted by the police shall boomerang. How long will the police fool the public?”

The outfit further reiterated that the state police should stop all these cheap propaganda tactics, which is said is adding fuel to fire.

“Time and again the police department has tried their level best to indulge into activities that had infused hatred among the cadres of the HNLC,” he said.

According to him, the leadership of the HNLC has taken the matter of peace talks seriously, while the police department on the other hand is making matters worse by inciting the feelings of hatred and disunity among our cadres.

“The police department should immediately stop their diplomatic conspiracies against the HNLC,” he said.

At the backdrop of the ongoing peace initiatives between the centre, state government and the HNLC, the police department should stop their divide and rule tactics, he said while adding if the peace processes derails then the police department shall solely be responsible for any negative outcome.- By Our Reporter
