GHADC:20 poll candidates

TURA,SEPT 16: A total of 20 candidates on Wednesday filed their nominations for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls.

In West Garo Hills, eleven candidates filed their nomination. In South West Garo Hills, seven candidates filed their nomination, while one each filed their nomination papers in North and South Garo Hills

Sitting member of district council (MDC) from Asanang Kredithson Marak filed his nomination as United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate. Veteran member of the council, who won four consecutive terms from Batabari constituency Roynath D Sangma, filed his nomination as Congress candidate.

Sitting MDC Dipul Marak and Estamur Momin filed their nomination as National Peoples’ Party (NPP) candidate for Rochonpara and Shyamnagar constituency respectively.

Among others were – Independent candidate Jimbirth Marak for Amongpara, Pillarson Marak for Dengnakpara and Jessey Marak for Babelapara.

Sofiur Rahman became the first non-tribal to file his nomination as Independent candidate for Balachanda constituency, where Congress has allotted ticket to Monirul Islam, who is yet to file his nomination.

NPP has fielded Cary Marak for Balachanda.

The civil bodies and rebel groups are strongly objecting non-tribals participation in the polls, slated for October 12.

In South West Garo Hills, all four Congress candidates have filed their nomination today at Ampati. They are sitting MDC Nipendra Koch for Betasing, Stevie Marak for Boldamgre, Moppish Marak for Nogorpara and Jogadish Hajong for Zikzak.

Three independent candidates filed their nomination at Ampati for Nogorpara constituency. They are  – James Sangma and Drogil Sangma and Hardy Marak.

In South Garo Hills, Vidith Sangma filed his nomination as Independent candidate for Siju constituency. In North Garo Hills Chiring Peter

Marak filed his nomination for Kharkutta as Independent candidate. The last date for filing nomination is September 21. Five lakh plus electorates will decide fate of candidates vying for 29 constituencies in the council.

The term of the council had expired in February 2013.

However, the polls were postponed as state and centre government had inked a settlement agreement with rebel outfits – A’chik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) and its breakaway faction – ANVC (B). Both the outfit has been disbanded.

Some of the top leaders of the former rebel groups will be contesting the council polls but have not yet filed nomination. Officially, former breakaway ANVC(B) chief Rimpu Marak has said that candidates from their camp will come forward to contest.-From Our Correspondent
