Pro-talk group urges Centre to bring ULFA-I for peace talks

SHILLONG, FEB 5: United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) pro-talk faction’s general secretary Anup Chetia on Tuesday urged the Centre to also bring on board the ULFA-I leader Paresh Baruah for peace talks.

Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, Chetia said they have appeal several times but Baruah is not mentally prepared to come forward to the negotiation table.

“But we would like to request the Government of India to take some initiatives to bring him (Baruah) to the peace process,” he said.

Chetia however said the reason for Baruah not coming forward may be he is learning from the Naga peace process, which started since 1997 but there has been no solution till date adding “There should be some solution there should be some encouragement to him.”

Asked on the status of the peace talks, he said due to the issue related to the Citizenship Amendment Bill, the peace process right now is stopped. “I think after decision on CAB (is taken) may be will get some positive result from the government of India,” he added.

Claiming that his organisation is not indulging in any criminal activities, Chetia said the ULFA-Independent is a separate organisation and it is their decision if they are indulging in such unlawful activities.

Parent group resorting to violence – no those who are in peace process, we are not taking part in any criminal and violent activities. Independent is a separate organisation they have separated from us they are indulging in some activities but it is their decision.

“…ULFA-I is quite separate organisation they will decide what they will do in future. I cannot say on ULFA-I,” he said.
