‘Probe misinformation’

SHILLONG, JUNE 25: The opposition combine ARPA in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Thursday demanded constitution of a ‘special committee’ to find out who is responsible for misinforming the public attending the meeting of the Dorbar Bah Ka Bri Hynniewtrep on May 30.

The Dorbar Bah Ka Bri Hynniewtrep, a biggest public rally held in recent times was organized by the umbrella body of headmen Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong (SKRS), which demanded immediate passing Village Administration Bill.

The public meeting was also held on the same day when the KHADC on the direction of the Governor convened a special session to pass the VAB.

“The council should constitute a special committee to find out those responsible for misinforming the public attending the meeting and to ensure such things are not repeated in the future,” Opposition leader Metbah Lyngdoh told the house during the ongoing session on Thursday.

Lyngdoh was supporting the motion moved by KHNAM MDC James Ban Basaiawmoit on the public announcement in the meeting at Polo ground on May 30 that the VAB had been passed by the KHADC when discussion was still going on.

Basaiawmoit said while the house was still in session, it was surprising that the public announcement was made that all the 30 MDCs have passed the VAB.

The ARPA had taken strong exception to the public announcement as the opposition MDCs were never part of the decision to pass the VAB As they are opposed to the deletion of two sections from the original bill.

“One of the elders attending the meeting told me that they had made the announcement based on the information received from the council,” he said adding “This is clear that all the information came from none other than our own members.”

“We want an inquiry not to defame anybody but to ensure such things are not allowed to continue,” he said.

Former KHADC chief Adelbert Nongrum said that this is a serious matter which needs to be corrected. He termed that such leakage is a violation against secrecy and sanctity of the house.

HSPDP MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem suggested the council to restrict carrying mobile phones inside the house to prevent such incidents.

However, \Executive Member- in charge Elaka- Lamphrang Blah instead of giving a direct reply to the motion gave a brief background about the incident that led to convening of the special session on May 30.

Only when the opposition members objected by raising point of order, Lamphrang queried on what ground will the council constitutes the special committee.

The debate on the motion was inconclusive after the time allotted for Thursday’s session ended before the executive committee could really reply to the motion.- By Our Reporter
