Probe on Assam’s vandalism

SHILLONG, JULY 22: The Ri Bhoi district administration has started its inquiry over the alleged vandalisation of kitchen shed of a lower primary school by Assam police at Sabuda village, under Raid Nongtung in Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday. Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner Akasheep on Monday told this website that he has already taken up the matter with his Assam counterpart.

The Assam police on Saturday had vandalised the kitchen shed of a lower primary school at Sabuda village, under Raid Nongtung in Ri-Bhoi district which is a disputed area.

It is alleged that Assam police personnel, led by a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Karbi Anglong district, had also allegedly taken 30 bags of cement and iron rod meant for the kitchen shed which was under construction. The incident irked the Dorbar Shnong of Sabuda and it lodged an FIR at Mawlasnai police outpost

Taking strong note of the incident, Akashdeep has directed the additional district magistrate P Kharkongor to conduct an inquiry and find out the reason that led to the incident.

Akashdeep, however, clarified that Assam police had not demolished the shed but prevented the construction since status quo has to be maintained by both the states in a disputed area.

According to Akashdeep, certain portions in the disputed area falls under the jurisdiction of Assam and vice versa and these particular school is under the administration of Assam as it is located two kilometers inside the Assam border outpost.

He also informed that the Assam police who had taken away the construction materials have returned it on Monday.

It may be mentioned that the school, established in 1995, has been catering to around 40 students with two qualified teachers.

Meanwhile, the United Democratic Party (UDP) state youth wing has asked the Meghalaya government to act against the Assam government.

UDP youth wing vice president and former KSU leader Hamlet Dohling on Monday said that state government must act against the Assam government and not remain mere spectator to the alleged highhandedness of Assam authorities.

The youth wing has also demanded compensation from the Assam government for the damage that they have done to the school.

Dohling said, “We strongly condemned against this act of the Assam government against the people residing in the border area especially the incident that occur in lower primary school in Sabuda.” – By Our Reporter
