SHILLONG, JULY 9: In a tragic man-made incident that reflects poorly on the state PWD, a PWD junior engineer Lemingson Marak died and sixteen construction workers were injured when an RCC bride that was being constructed in Kolmesalgre village in East Garo hills district caved on Tuesday morning.

An official informed that the casting of the slab of the Kolmesalgre bridge which connects to the district headquarter Williamnagar started from Monday.

As per technical report, the slab seems to have weak support structure leading to the collapse of the under construction bridge that killed the junior engineer when it collapsed under him. He reportedly died on the spot and sixteen other construction workers were injured.

The injured have been shifted to the Tura Civil hospital and according to East Garo hills deputy commissioner Vijay Mantri none of the injured have sustained seriously injuries and some of them have been discharged after first aid.

The junior engineer who died was due to retire from service next year.

The police have registered a suo motto case and have started investigation into the tragedy. Mantri also informed that he has ordered a magisterial inquiry which will be headed by the ADM SB Marak to probe into causes that led to tragic incident.

Meghalaya social welfare minister who was elected from Deborah Marak expressed shocked at the incident that killed the engineer and injured sixteen construction workers. She blames the PWD for the incident.

Speaking to reporters, Marak asked the PWD to take the entire responsibility of the incident.  She said, “Technical staff should have checked whether it was a right decision to go for casting slabs at this time as contractors are laymen and they do not have the technical details.”
